Aromatherapy Blends
People make blends of various aromatherapy oils so that they enhance each other and elevate the healing qualities. However, not all oils can be added together. Blending comes under two different categories, aromatic and therapeutic. Aromatic blends are created simply for the scent that is produced. Therapeutic involves blending two oils that have healing benefits that promote or strengthen each other. Aromatherapy blends use only natural ingredients like essential oils, carrier oils, herbs, water, etc.
Essential oils are further categorized into different groups based on their aroma for example, floral, minty, citrus and woodsy. Oils in the same category blend well together and some categories also mix well together. Essential oils have scents that change over time because they evaporate. Some oils evaporate quicker than others. When oils are blended, the different rates of evaporation can change the aroma significantly. The oils that evaporate the quickest, which is within an hour or two, are called the top notes. Oils that last 2-4 hours are called middle notes and oils that take the longest time to evaporate are called base notes. Base notes can take several days to fully evaporate. Therefore the types of oil combined can make entirely different scents which are consistently changing. One extra drop of oil can make a huge difference and the only way to truly find the blend you want is by trial and error.
