Carrier Oil

Carrier oil is also called as base oil or vegetable oil. It is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before applying to the skin. There are various carrier oils with unique properties and features in aromatherapy. Since they carry the essential oil onto the skin, they are called as carrier oils.

Unlike essential oils, they neither contain any concentrated aroma nor do they evaporate like them. Similarly carrier oils can go rancid. Sweet almond and the grape seed oils are the most popular aroma carrier oils. Other carrier oils include Avocado, olive oil, sesame oil, evening primrose, sunflower, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and much more.

Carrier oils are cold-pressed vegetable oils taken from the fatty portions of the plant. Carrier oils provide 98 % of the aromatherapy treatment. They can be directly applied to the skin unlike essential oils .They are also sometimes called as 'fixed oils' because they do not evaporate.
