Chamomile
There are three types of chamomile, German, Roman and chamomile mixta. Steam installation of Roman chamomile flowers produces a yellow essential oil with a mild scent while German chamomile is blue and has a stronger fruitier smell. Chamomile has been used for over 2000 years for nervous conditions and insomnia. It is used as aromatherapy oil due to its calming effect. It can be useful for soothing irritated skin and can be effectively used in steam facial. The scent is derived from the white flowers of the chamomile herb. Chamomile oil can be added to baths to aid headaches. It is also popular as an air freshener for the home.
This popular oil has many soothing qualities although there have not been enough scientific studies to prove its valuable uses. There are however some risks associated with it's use. It should not be used in early pregnancy and should be avoided throughout the rest of the pregnancy and while breastfeeding. It can have digestive and sedative properties but mixed with other oils that promote sleep, it can cause enough drowsiness to warrant the avoidance of activities like driving. All essential oils should be used with some caution.
